Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each and every day, I am proud of my students. Most live in poverty, have overcrowded homes, and struggle with gang activity in their neighborhood. The vast majority of our students receive free or reduced-cost lunch, and many eat dinner at school as well. Often, students have a lot of responsibility at home helping siblings. Some have parents or other relatives in prison.
Yet, each day they come to school eager to read and learn.
The key to this learning is access to quality books. Our older school was originally built without a library, and the books for the entire 4th and 5th grade occupy a single classroom. Books are old, and the selection of up to date books is very limited.
My Project
In order for my students to become avid readers for the 21st century, I need new, red-hot books to pull them away from their devices. I have seen it again and again in my many years of working with students....nothing encourages reading more than the latest books.
This collection of books will have my students reading like never before.
My students themselves have chosen these books to add to our class library. Our small school library rarely has popular books the students crave, nor do these children have access to new books at home. Help me provide the reading material these wonderful students deserve.
