As the Literacy Coach in our building, I have the awesome gift of seeing children grow from Pre-K Screening through 5th grade student leadership. We currently have 150 students in the hybrid model and 60 students in full remote.
We are a richly diverse school.
Many languages are spoken in our students' homes including Portuguese, Somali, Arabic and French. Approximately 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch so we are able to provide Title I services schoolwide. Our neighborhood school has deep roots and we have many families with parents who attended the school.
My Project
What a year! Our students have been learning in a hybrid model since September and continue to grow as readers. Despite huge obstacles, they have been working hard to build their reading skills. Getting books in their hands for the summer will help us sustain this growth.
Help us keep their momentum going!
The Scholastic book sets include titles that reflect our students and families cultures, STEM, and Caldecott winners. Summer reading programs are most successful when students pick their own books. The goal each year is for students to read about 8 books over the summer. To kick off this effort, I hope to send all of my students home with 2-3 new books as well as training for families on how to access digital books and the public library resources.
