Hurricane Rita could have discouraged our community but as educators we would not allow it to happen. Our enthusiasm, compassion, and passion to help our children to develop a love of reading will give them the ticket to succeed on life's journey. I am requesting items to reward our at-risk children at the 2nd and 3rd grade level. Many of the children do not have access to books at home so the book bags that I am requesting will be used for children to have a book sleep over at their home. A few childen from 12 classrooms will be able to bring the book bag home and complete the activity with their parents. This will encourage parental involvement which is so desperately needed. Many of these parents have no transportation to the local library. This project, to be used with 200 students, will definitely increase the children's interest and love of reading while at the same time improve their reading scores on our school's Dibels Assessment and the iLeap Assessment. We are so proud of last year's assessment scores despite the surge from Hurricane Rita affecting 7 of our parish schools. Our school has increased in enrollment from 500 to over 700 due to two schools closing in our parish after Hurricane Rita. 81% of our students are from low economic families. These are our future leaders and I believe that they are important to society. Can you please help me to make a difference in the lives of so many children. I promise your finances will be put to good use and will definitely be appreciated. Thank you for considering this proposal.
