Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Could you imagine knowing that your very existence is a crime? That is the life that Luke Garner is forced to live in the shadows.
My students are low readers.
Even though they are in 4th/5th grade, most are at a second grade reading level. By following along whole class to the beginning of a seven book series they get to follow the central character through his adventurous (and illegal) life. By being able to follow along as a group, they get to hear and see the joy of reading as opposed to simply reading the Dr. Seuss books at their level. By 4th/5th grade, they get insecure about their own lack of achievement and abilities.
My Project
If the joy of reading with a group can open their eyes to the possibilities books hold, it can inspire them to read ahead or reread the chapter we read that day to ensure understanding. I have seen both happen in the lowest of my readers and the sparkle in their eyes is incomparable to any video game out there! That is why I am requestinga fantastic 7 book series and a class set of the first two books in the series.
The reason books are so important is because most of these children are in severely disadvantaged areas and if they get a crisp new book, they will know how good it can feel to be empowered knowing that somebody else out there might feel the same way you do.
