I teach honors-level English to tenth grade students. These students come from a variety of backgrounds (some ESL, some very rural upbringing), and although several in each class are ESL, the diversity is relatively low. Students often do not enjoy reading and have a limited view of the world around them.
In an effort to increase an interest in reading, foster open-mindedness and creativity, and create lasting connections with my students, I want to host a book raffle the first week of school.
Every year my students end up amazing me with what they are capable of - I just want to open that door to them from the very beginning!
My Project
In this project I am requesting various young adult texts, like The Marrow Theives and Saints and Misfits. Students often come into my classroom with little desire to read. My goal is to ignite this passion in them again with current, popular, young adult texts such as Refugee. The first week of school I want to engage them and build rapport with them by having a book raffle. Each student gets a ticket with their name and can put it in a jar to win a book of their liking.
By starting the year with something they can read for enjoyment I am hoping to get their teeth wet for what we will ultimately cover during the remainder of the school year.
