My students need good books to read that are at their interest and reading level.

Every student in my class has a drive to learn. They are ambitious, and eager. However, they come from a low-income community where their home life might difficult for them to deal with and living through circumstances we could never imagine or understand at their age. Our school is about 95% free or reduced lunch. I want my students to go through this school year, a critical year, and not have to worry about anything but for their want and hunger to learn. These students already have enough stresses outside of school, and with the pressure of third grade, with this being their first year of state testing, they should be able to come to school have what they need to be successful and know that they are loved and taken care of when they come through their classroom door.
I am starting a book raffle in my classroom to entice students to become more interested in reading! Since meeting my students I have learned that many of them don't have books to read at home-I want to change that! These books will be raffled off as they earn tickets in the classroom for working hard, good grades, good behavior, kindness, etc. Several books will be in the raffle and will be displayed for them to add their tickets into the buckets of the books they want to read. I will ensure that all students have a chance to win a book this school year. If their name gets chosen for a book... the book is theirs. It will now belong to them. I want the students to find freedom, love, adventure, mystery and any other feeling that might come over them as they dive into stories escaping the world around them. I want to give these students a love for reading and to do that by having the opportunity to give them books that interest them.
