Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a great school in the South Bronx where students come to school ready to learn despite their circumstances. Our school is located in a high poverty area, and many of our students live in housing projects, shelters, or in single parent homes. Despite some of these struggles, our students see our school as their second home. They feel safe and loved by all of the staff. We are a true community of learners striving to be a little better each day. Despite this sense of community, many of our students are unable to come to school with the supplies they need.
I teach third grade literature and art to over sixty students.
I teach all the reading and writing fiction units and also incorporate visual thinking strategies using art pieces to develop accountable talk. I often see my school as The Little Engine that Could, because every year we make progress. This year we are going to be a city-wide Renewal School where we will open our doors to schools in NYC to come visit and see our best practices!
My Project
My students borrow books each week from our classroom library and take them home to read each night along with their reading logs as a way to close the gap of academic reading loss daily. We use a Ziploc or Hefty plastic bag to store and transport the books. Unfortunately, the bags are not sturdy enough and often tear and damage the books. We need 80 sturdier book baggies that will help keep the books intact and safely transport the books to and from home. Students will get to have the same book baggie all year instead of having to change their baggie at least 3-4 times a year because they have ripped. In addition, it will help our environment. Having sturdier bags will help eliminate waste and provide students the ability to borrow more books because these baggies will hold more books. What a sense of pride my students will have to not only be able to transport books to and from school safely, but also to help Mother Earth.
This donation will improve my classroom because it will provide students a sense of pride and independence and eliminate the frustration of ripped baggies and difficulty in closing the bags.
You will help my students become better readers and continue to strive to read on level by the end of the year, because they will be taking books home safely each night. I will be teaching about 65 students this year (all 3rd graders), and I would like for each student in the third grade to have their own sturdier book baggie.
