My Students

I have 22 active, curious students in my class. My class this year is one of the best groups of children I have had in 23 years of teaching. They love to read, joke, and play games. Our school is the most diverse in Southern Arizona; we have families from all over the world. My students are eager to learn and have become quite a cohesive community.

My students feel safe and comfortable at school.

For many of them, it is the only place they receive enough food and attention. My students live in poverty, and all of them qualify for free lunch. They are very resilient and adaptable because despite personal challenges they arrive at school every day eager for new experiences.

My Project

I always tell my students that they are the most important part of our classroom but that the books are second. My book collection began 23 years ago when I first started teaching. During that time, I have carefully selected quality books that I use to teach reading and writing in a literature-based approach (and to teach math, science, social studies, and interpersonal skills, of course). We have a useful system for organizing the books- there are signs on baskets and each book has a sticker that matches the sign for its basket.

My students have full access to the class library and their favorite way to spend time is to read self-selected books.

I can't stop buying books because I love their excitement when I introduce a new text. Many students choose to independently read books I have read aloud to the class. This has had a very positive effect because all of their reading levels increased dramatically. I am requesting the mobile book organizer because there is not enough room on the classroom shelves for all of the book baskets. There is also not enough room in the class library area for more than 6 or 7 students to choose books at one time. I can move the organizer across the room so more students can choose at the same time. This piece of furniture will keep our beloved books accessible. The best part is that I will be able to buy more books!
