My Students

Our school serves a low income, high needs population. The school over the last several years has seen a decline in enrollment due to school choice and lottery policies. Despite this decline in enrollment, we continue to push for high achievement and innovative practices, and it is because of this that I am seeking to implement a classroom library for extensive choice reading. Our kind and hard-working kids will respond to the high interest engaging texts, and through interacting with them and each other, we can potentially change their lives. A great book can inspire and change a person. It can draw a person in and open doors to new ideas. It can give a student a new way of looking at things. Our kids deserve nothing less than this.

My Project

Books can change lives, and engaging texts can open doors to kids who would otherwise leave the cover of a text closed.

I would like to hook kids into reading again.

So many young people love reading until we "ruin it" for them. By providing them with choice and encouraging stamina and increasing complexity over time, my goal is to build book love, as inspired by Penny Kittle.

Students will be be reading everyday in class, setting reading goals, reflecting on their reading, completing book talks, and writing about their texts. This will be a year long project for students 9-12.
