In preparation for North Carolina's Shakespeare Festival's Schoolfest performance of "As You Like It" in their fall 2005 season, I plan for my students to read the play in class. The Folger Edition of the plays is not only a good size to manage (important since my classes read the plays on their feet, not in their seats), but it also provides the most useful text helps, not as unwieldy footnotes, but directly across the page from the lines in question. Most high school students are exposed only to Shakespeare's tragedies (Hamlet, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar). However, his comedies, which are much more accessible to young people, offer a great introduction to the world's greatest writer. Starting with a comedy, they are better able to appreciate his incomparable language and his timeless characters; consequently, their study of "Hamlet" or "Macbeth" is enriched by this introduction to the text.
