My students need these high-interest books to help generate a love of reading in them. I don't want them to read because they have to, I want them to read because they WANT to.
How do you get 75 seventh graders to love reading? You provide them with high-interest, engaging books.
My students come from a high poverty neighborhood (71% of our students receive free and reduced lunch) and 17% are English language learners.
Unfortunately, many of my students have not yet discovered a love of learning, have little access to books, or lack a parent at home who supports their learning to read. My school desperately lacks resources and is only able to provide a few new books to our classroom libraries each year. Sadly, what books we are able to provide are generally not of interest to my students, and our class library books are often lost. My students deserve access to wonderful books. Can you please help them?
My Project
In our Accelerated Reader program, students are expected to read 30 minutes a day. Access to interesting books of various reading levels is a must in motivating students to meet their AR goals. My dream is to have so many great books that students struggle to make a book choice. My goal as a teacher is to generate a love of reading in my students, and I am able to do that when I can provide students with great books.
My classroom library is the most important part of my room.
It is where students come together to read and discuss books and develop a love of reading. Students who excel at reading are able to excel in school and consequently excel in life. Contributing to my classroom library will put my students on the path to a successful future.
