"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss Learning to read is a fundamental part of education and opens up so many great opportunities for my students.
I teach Kindergarten at a Title I school.
The students come from very diverse backgrounds and experiences. Most of my students qualify to receive free or reduced lunch at school each day. Their parents are often unable to provide them with high quality reading materials at home. Although my students may not have many books to read at home, they are all so eager to learn when they get to school. I want to engage and excite them with every lesson that I teach so that their love of learning will continue to grow! I teach students of all ability levels and also have several ELL students in my class. I strive to be able to give my students the materials that will enrich their education.
I have always dreamed of being able to have a student bookshelf in my classroom but have never had the funds to do so. Having this bookshelf would allow my students to sit in the "book nook" and have easy access to a large supply of great books. Right now, I keep all of their books in baskets. It is very hard for them to browse the books and select ones that they are interested in. The books often get messy and unorganized, taking away from valuable student learning time. The Lakeshore bookshelf would allow me to display various books in the classroom library, enticing my students to read even more. The "Learning to Get Along" picture book set would go great with the new bookshelf. I strive to instill good values in my students. I believe that these books would really enhance my character education lessons. Today's students are tomorrow's leaders and I want my students to be ready for that challenge.
The student bookshelf and character education books will really mean a lot to my students!
They will be able to be more independent when selecting books. This will increase their excitement and love of reading. These materials will not only be great for this group of students but will be helping students in my class for many years to come!
