This will be my sixth year teaching 4th grade and 4th year teaching in Pender County. I am lucky enough to teach energetic, personality-filled, fantastic kids. They all have their strengths; they all bring something different to our classroom. And let me tell you, they can all make you smile.
All of my students have positive attitudes and determination to succeed but may lack the resources necessary to do so.
All my students may look different on the outside but throughout the year they end up finding more similarities with one another than they thought. With support, love, and consistency, these children can achieve the impossible. I cannot wait to see how much they grow as students and people throughout this year!
My Project
In our 4th grade classroom we love collaborating, reading and relating our lessons to the real world. Everyday we read a novel together which is usually above many of our students' individual reading level. In addition to our class novel, students have their book clubs where they get to work with one another on a certain novel. There are so many activities they complete and share with each other.
We have tried something new this year where our class novels and book clubs have shared the same theme or characters and the individual growth has been amazing!
We will be doing an ecosystem unit and reading the novel The Wild Robot together. I would love for my students to have the opportunity to read Hello Universe, Poppy or Wishtree for their book clubs. These novels may be different reading levels but all share the ideas of unfamiliar friendships and have many references to nature.
By incorporating common themes my students are able to make more personal connections and are able to collaborate with students in other reading groups. This group of 4th graders is very special in the sense they are all unique but they all share the love for collaboration and reading. I have seen them grow so much through novels and book clubs and would love to see this growth continue!
