There's nothing like reading a good book. Unfortunately, with all the distractions kids have today, such as video games, television, computers, iPods, DVDs, extracurricular activities, etc., reading ranks low on their list of priorities. I want to help students realize that reading is fun, and it's a great way for them to spend their time. I teach third, fourth, and fifth grade. I float between 12 classrooms to help students with learning needs. I see about 250 students during the week. One thing I notice is that the older the student the less likely he/she is to pick up a book and read. When I saw how successful Oprah Winfrey was in getting America to read with her book clubs, I thought why not have book clubs for kids. We currently have several book clubs in action, which consist of small groups of students in grades 3 through 5. Each club has an adult facilitator who is either a parent volunteer or a staff member, including our principal and assistant principal. Each book club meets at least once a week during lunch to relax, eat, and read a great book together. There are no tests, worksheets, or essays to write, just interesting conversation about the books they are reading. The book club meets until the book is finished which is generally about six to nine weeks. This project has been very successful. We have noticed that kids are reading more often. Students have asked for titles of books that are similar to the ones they have read in book club or books by the same author. I have also had students approach me in the hallway asking, "When do I get a turn to be in a book club?" Students are actually begging to be in a book club. It seems too good to be true (but it is). The only problem that I am having with this project is that I don't have enough books. I need more books (6 to 10 copies of the same title) to supply student book clubs. I want to get kids reading!
