My students need 12 copies of "Every Soul a Star Wendy Mass" and "11 Birthdays" to use in our book clubs.
Adult book lovers can't wait to talk about their latest read and compare notes. But kids can do the same! In these formative years when kids truly develop their love of learning, they need well-written, interesting books (in good shape) that will captivate them.
My students are fourth graders in a public school in Texas.
Many of them come to me without being in the habit of picking quality books or having the stamina to complete a book - cover to cover! These kids are so eager to learn, and want to love what their teacher loves. My kids know how important reading and books are to me, and that gives me great influence with them.
These two books, 11 Birthdays and Every Soul a Star, are two wonderful books written by popular children's author, Wendy Mass. Students will be captivated by their story lines, and inspired by Mass's writing. We will discuss these books in small groups, where we not only reinforce the reading skills we are working on in class, but also learn to love the stories, and break down big ideas. We will become best friends with the characters, and feel what they feel. These kids will become better readers and, more importantly, better thinkers.
Many of the books I currently have access to for small groups are quite literally falling apart, and many of the titles are not the least bit current.
Receiving these books would allow me to work with my kids with current, qualitiy literature. They will not only become smarter through their study of these books, but the will develop a love of reading. That is quite possibly the best gift to give a student!
