This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Milwaukee youth live in the city dubbed the "worst for Black Americans." Our city is the nation's most segregated and has the highest incarceration and unemployment rates for Black men. After the unrest in Sherman Park this summer, my predominantly Black students are hungry for change. Despite facing many challenges, they arrive at school each morning with a desire to learn and improve their community.
Together, we're on a mission to make Milwaukee and the world a better place for all people.
My students are passionate, creative, and brilliant. They have tremendous energy and are eager to read, write, and act. With your help, we can continue transforming ourselves to transform our city.
My Project
In Room 286, we've been exploring gender and racial stereotypes in American society. My students have asked poignant and insightful questions throughout the school year about what it means to be an American and why we live with the racial injustice that we do.
My students need 35 copies of American Street to explore immigrant identity in urban America in their book clubs. In light of current events and national conversations about immigration, it's more important than ever that we engage in dialogue about what it means to be an American.
Literature can help us launch into these conversations unlike any other tool. American Street will contribute the voice of the American immigrant to our discussions about growing up black in urban America, connecting many of my students' experiences with those of immigrants in similar neighborhoods.
