I love teaching first grade - it is a year of so much growth! I enjoy watching my students take all that they are learning and put it together to grow as learners. My school is full of amazing students, caring families and a staff that is like a big, huge family. I teach in a Title 1 School and many of my students receive free or reduced lunches, a backpack of food each week or quality time with a community mentor. Despite the challenges many of my students face, they are eager to learn and grow each day.
Our school was honored as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2015.
Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. I am honored to enter my 21st year of teaching and brought my own children here as well. I am so thankful to be a part of this amazing school community!
My Project
My students have been immersed in a world of reading this year since we started using a Workshop model to teach reading. Each day begins with a mini-lesson and often includes rich literature to model our focus strategy. Children are exposed to a variety of genres and authors throughout the year as they build their reading skills each day during the workshop. Our classroom library continues to expand as we add titles in order to provide an abundance of choices for students to choose from. My students eagerly fill their book boxes each week with new titles to explore.
We are loving our Units of Study curriculum and mentor texts from Teacher's College but would love some additional books to support these lessons.
The books listed here are suggested by the authors to enhance the lessons. These are all titles references in our teaching guides but not included in our pack of mentor texts.
