1st grade is such an amazing year of literacy growth for children! They enter into my classroom in September with so many skills and leave in June as readers who put it all together! Reading Workshop is one way that I encourage a love of reading and raise "thinking readers" in my classroom. During our workshop each day, children hear a mini-lesson and then head off to choose and read their own books. Having a robust classroom library is essential so that all kids can find books that they are excited about. Favorite characters like Pete the Cat and Piggie & Elephant are favorites for sure! It is always exciting to listen in on partner conversations when kids are excited about what they are reading! Kids also need a place to keep all of the books they are reading. Book bins are bright, colorful and just the right size to hold the books that each student needs every day. They are an important tool to my growing readers!
