My students live in a rural city. There are many students in our school who speak Spanish or another language at home. Over half our school's population receives free or reduced price lunch. Breakfast is free for every student in the district. I have several students who receive a backpack for the weekend that is filled with food for them to eat.
My students are eager to learn and won't let any hardship wear them down.
Last year, when they were in kindergarten, our district had 2 floods and 2 tornadoes near the end of the school year. The students, just like our community, are resilient and look forward to helping others.
Books and literacy go hand in hand! It's hard for teachers to keep leveled books in order, so having them in labeled book bins would help create an organized, functional, and calm classroom! Students will feel confident in putting the bins in the correct place with them labeled. Books are used to promote a love of learning and to encourage students to learn about nonfiction topics as well as having exposure to more difficult styles of texts. It can be difficult for teachers and students to know where the correct place a book should go if there isn't a specific spot for it!
