My students come from a variety of backgrounds: low income, middle class, upper middle class, single parent, two parents, involved parents, no parents, etc. Regardless of where they come from, I want to provide my students with whatever they need to be successful each day. The SSYRA books, such as, Girl Who Could Not Dream by Sarah Beth Durst, Click’d by Tamara Ireland Stone, Eureka Key by Sarah Thomson, and Frogkisser! by Garth Nix will provide my students will more opportunities to read great quality literature.
Our sixth graders deserve everything they need to be successful readers!
Engagement is the key to a successful classroom. I am happy to do anything that I can do to bring in supplies, books, and technology to make our lessons more engaging.
My Project
Our school participates in Book Bash every year. A team of only 12 students are able to participate. It is my hope to encourage ALL the students in my class to read the 15 books required to participate so that we can have a class wide celebration!
Having our own class sets of the SSYRA books will allow more students to be able to read them so that ALL students will be able to participate in a celebration of reading revolving around these books!
My students will be able to choose the SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Readers Award) books In the order they wish to read them. We’ll keep track of each book read. Some of the books that received this award and that will be available for my students are: Rebound by Gordon Korman, Short by Holly Goldberg Stone, and Ghost by Jason Reynolds. Jason Reynolds has been very popular with my current students! At the end of the year, we will have a Literary Feast featuring the food mentioned in each book! There will be games and activities revolving around these fifteen books. I am so excited and I know the kids will be too!
