Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at an ethnically and linguistically diverse Title I school in East Oakland, where over 90% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. A majority of students speak Spanish at home. To better serve our community, we are moving towards becoming a dual immersion school -- this year, our first Dual Language students are in fourth grade!

My room is filled with the most brilliant second graders you'll ever meet.

They work hard every day, eager and excited to learn. Our students come from families who often have limited formal education, but possess vast community cultural wealth. Our school vision is built around working in partnership with families to shepherd our students from kinder to eighth grade. We work to achieve academic excellence through bilingualism and bi-literacy, build cross-cultural competencies in our students, and honor our students' capacity to improve the world as social change agents. Perhaps most importantly, we seek to create and maintain a foundation of love and care that pulses through our school.

My Project

One of the best things about teaching second grade is watching students fall more deeply in love with books and reading. I'm on a mission this year to revitalize our classroom library, bringing in thousands of titles that my students simply cannot get enough of. Second grade, like many of the grade levels at our school, is departmentalized; that means that every single second grader passes through my room each day for English class, and gets to enjoy all these wonderful books! The challenge now is keeping the items from each week's 'book shopping' organized in shared desks.

These high-quality canvas book bags have space for all the books my students will borrow each week.

The colors will be assigned for each class, so that students can easily grab their own book bag rather than a classmates'.
