For the past several years, our students have been engaged in becoming a culture of thinkers, a place where a group’s collective as well as individual thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted as part of the regular, day-to-day experience of all group members. We recently adopted the Leader In Me program that helps teach our students leadership, accountability, adaptability, initiative, and self-direction, cross-cultural skills, responsibility, problem-solving, communication, creativity, and teamwork.
Our classroom of thinkers are the leaders of the leaders.
They are burdened not only by being the model learners for their younger brothers, sisters, cousins, and friends who look up to them, but they also are on the verge of one of the biggest transitions of their lives as they prepare to enter the middle school with their 600 new classmates.
My Project
Students are thinking a TON in their math notebooks. With all their practice, it can become a struggle for their thinking to stay organized. Then, eventually, they're lost and never to be found.
With more Boogie Boards, more students will be able to use these tools to assist in their mathematical thinking.
Small groups and centers are much more efficient when working without having to worry about sharpening pencils, cleaning whiteboards, or finding markers that still work. We can get right to work by grabbing them from their hanging spot up front and dive into the deep mathematical thinking of fifth grade.
