Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are intelligent, thoughtful and full of great ideas! They are part of our school's Biomedical STEM Academy, and most plan on pursuing a career in the medical field. While their innate curiosity makes them great students, many of them are reluctant readers. My goal this year is to change that reluctance into enthusiasm.

I believe that students who resist reading just haven't found the right book yet; I want to do everything I can to make sure each of my students finds that book that is going to spark their love of reading and (hopefully) make them lifelong readers.

Each child in my classroom brings a unique point of view, and the diversity of our classroom makes it an exciting place to learn. They are truly an incredible group, and they deserve a class library that will both inspire and challenge them to grow as readers and, consequently, as more informed and empathetic citizens of our community.

My Project

The cornerstone of the Language Arts curriculum is reading, but often students find core novels boring, dry, and irrelevant to their lives. This year, my students are going to supplement that required reading with novels of choice. In order to do so, our classroom library needs to be stocked with a wide array of both classic and contemporary books that will pique students' interests and get them reading.

Helping students become lifelong readers is one of the most important investments we can make--research shows that self-selected reading benefits students' sense of agency as well as their overall intellectual, moral, and personal lives.

The only way to become a better reader is to read more. Providing students with books that they love will help them associate reading with pleasure, and will set them on the path to becoming independent, proficient readers.
