Help me give my students the materials they need to create and display dramatic charcoal drawings. Throughout this drawing process students will learn chiaroscuro, an Italian term referring to the expressive technique of using bold lights and darks.
I'm very fortunate to work with an exceptionally talented, motivated group of Visual Arts students. My students have chosen to pursue their artistic dreams through studying at a prestigious public Arts high school in Manhattan. To gain a seat in the school these students auditioned by submitting a portfolio (when they were a mere 12 or 13 years old), and sit for a rigorous drawing exam. Upon beginning their study, students take a daily 90-minute drawing and painting class where their burgeoning skills are further developed and refined. My current students are in their Freshman year, and they are currently pursuing their foundation Basic Drawing course this semester. Many have an authentic and serious interest in studying art, and have dreams of continuing their love of art beyond high school. These are a committed and passionate group of young artists.
My students are a dedicated bunch.
Students may live in any one of New York's five boroughs, and some travel long distances on the subway to reach school every day. In addition to the rich, serious work they do in studying Fine Arts, the academic courses they take are challenging courses. Many of my students take Advanced Placement courses.
My Project
As a NYC Public school we do receive funding for supplies, however do to the rigor and intensity with which our students study and develop their art-making skills and abilities our budget just can't keep up with our students' creative pursuits! I have a long and through unit focused on learning how charcoal can be used to create dramatic and powerful self-portraits making use of the chiaroscuro technique.
The supplies I have requested here will be used by my students to hone and refine their study of the medium, as well as give them the materials to complete a long-term self-portrait in charcoal.
Additionally, I plan to exhibit the completed portraits in the school lobby exhibition space.
