Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"I thought science was boring but after taking your class, I am going to major in chemistry." WOW! I am teaching chemistry to high school grades 10-12. We are a school with a low income community of hard working families. Our school has been growing tremendously. Our growth has actually required the expansion of chemistry from two teachers to four.

We have been fortunate enough to have had an expansion to our school but with new classrooms, we did not get additional needed equipment. With the expansion of our chemistry department, our labs have been greatly impacted. We have increased the amount of labs that are carried out and the lab curriculum is outstanding. Students are being inspired after every one. Currently, we will be talking about the Bohr atomic model. The amazing lab that comes with this is the Flame Test. Students get to excite some electrons and inquiring minds will want to know: Why did the element produce that color? Our problem: we don't have enough Bunsen burners. Currently, we share Bunsen burners between teachers.

My class would benefit greatly from having our own set of Bunsen burners. To be able to answer "What happens when electrons jump energy levels?" with "Let's find out students, get those Bunsen burners out." would be a great joy.

With your help, my students will discover the power of jumping electrons. Who knows, maybe you will be the stepping stone these kids need to become our future scientists.
