My students need an effective and engaging learning environment using "Flexible or Alternative Seating." The POWER OF CHOICE creates a unique seat which tailors meaningful learning experiences that caters to a happier and more productive child.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school is located in the east Coachella Valley. It is a rural and low-income public school that was built back in 1902. Nearly 83% of our students are English Learners and 98% of students are from low-income families. More than 97 percent of students qualify for free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch! This includes migrant students of migrant farmworkers during the picking season of various crops in the fields.
My 2nd grade students and I belong in an inclusive classroom that educate students with and without disabilities.
After 13 years of teaching second grade, I believe and so I use a variety of teaching methods and strategies, resources, and learning materials to reach the span of ability levels & learning styles of my students. I strive to spark the learning in every students by using class routines, hands-on activities, electronic binders, instructional technology, cooperative group works, diorama, science experiments, artworks, educational songs and chants, and YouTube student demonstrations are seen daily or annually in our inclusive class.
Each of my students are given the same educational opportunities to
learn about one another, develop respect, and gain a deeper awareness and understanding of themselves and their classmates around them.
My Project
Dr. Merritt (2014), uses the theory of sensory integration that was developed by A. Jean Ayres around 1972, to support his belief that there is a relationship between the neural processes of receiving, modifying, and integrating sensory input and the resulting output which is adaptive behavior. Because the brain and the body work in conjunction while learning, a child’s attention could be improved by physical stimulation within the classroom.
Unique as each student is, flexible seating or alternative seating will fully engage and help students become more successful; and it also creates the sense of ownership of their space and a whole mind-body connection.
Flexible seating will motivate and help young children who have attention and focus problems. It promotes concentration and alertness because it provides each student with the choice of sitting on a Balance Ball, on a Sensory Cushion with their iPad, or sitting on a Wobble Chair. Movement is a good thing! Flexible seats allows students to change their posture throughout the day which will increase blood flow and will help reduce fatigue due to sitting in a rigid hard chair all day long.
An advantage to flexible seating is the option of providing a designated “Smart Spot” which is essential for a child. A place where a child can go to do their best work! By providing each student different options of seating that best fits their learning style, students will feel more relax and comfortable in his/her desired seat or preferred area of the classroom.
