What began as an idea called \"If You Can Read It, You Can Keep It\" became something they genuinely looked forward to. On book giveaway days, students carefully chose their books, flipped through the pages with excitement, and proudly placed them in their backpacks to take home.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading was active and purposeful. Students practiced decoding, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies using the new texts. We worked on predicting, summarizing, identifying character traits, and making connections to their own lives. For many of my English Language Learners, owning a book allowed them to reread at home, build confidence, and involve their families in the learning process. Ownership truly made a difference. Students read more because the book belonged to them.\r\n\r\nSome students who were once hesitant readers became eager participants and often asked what book they would receive next. Watching their confidence grow was one of the most meaningful outcomes of this project. These books did more than support literacy skills. They helped build pride, independence, and a lasting love of reading. Thank you for putting stories and opportunity directly into my students' hands.","fullyFundedDate":1576885200755,"projectUrl":"project/if-you-can-read-it-you-can-have-it/4625721/","projectTitle":"If You Can Read It, You Can Have It!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Alvarez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6232549_orig.jpg?crop=435,435,x0,y65&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1575661843106","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-alvarezmeccaelementary"},{"teacherId":6232549,"projectId":6491698,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our \"Super Hero Summer\" truly came to life.\r\n\r\n\r\nWe used the materials to guide students through a multi-day superhero design project. First, students brainstormed their hero's strengths and character traits. Then, they created detailed sketches and brought their ideas to life using the donated supplies. The project naturally blended art, writing, and social-emotional learning. Students wrote short origin stories explaining their hero's \"powers,\" often choosing qualities like kindness, bravery, and perseverance.\r\n\r\nStudents were proud of their finished creations and excited to take them home and share them with their families. The hands-on experience gave them a meaningful opportunity to express themselves creatively while staying engaged during summer learning.\r\n\r\nThis project reminded us how powerful creativity can be in keeping students motivated and connected to school.\r\n\r\nYour support did more than provide art supplies. Students have mentioned that they aren't worried about being hungry in case they arrive late to school because they know they will get a snack prior to recess. Also, many students are excited to try something new or have one of their favorite snacks. \r\n We have even started using different adjectives to describe the types of snacks we are eating. Instead of good and yummy we are learning new vocabulary such as savory and flavorful. This is a meaningful way to teach my students about language especially with a large population of English language learners.
