Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As an interdisciplinary high school teacher, I search for ways to incorporate special events and historical sites of New York City into my curriculum. I am so excited about the BODIES exhibit at South Street Seaport as it directly connects to my Human Anatomy workshop, "The Magic School Bus". During this workshop, students are researching different systems of the body, and presenting their findings to the class. This activity is meant to be a precursor to understanding how the human body contains a group of systems that must work together in order to maintain homeostasis, and to keep us healthy. Part of the course is a lab skills unit which includes a dissection. This exhibit directly relates to my course. Of course, I am unable to have students dissect an actual human body, and have to resort to rats or frogs, which mimic many of our body systems. However, the BODIES exhibit includes actual human bodies that have been dissected, including fetuses up through adults. Students will not only have a visual representation of the work that they are studying, but will be able to make the connection of how the body systems work as a cohesive unit. Thank you for this opportunity. I know this will be an amazing experience for my students.
