My Project

Our life science students have shown an active passion for environmental science and care for the out doors. We have found an area of need in our community and long to support the local Bobwhite quail populations through our classroom work. Students would be hatching, raising, training, and then releasing quail into local habitats in the hopes of revitalizing this limited species.

In our rural community, we have plenty of habitat for these native birds but most students have never seen them in the wild; my students long to change this for future generations.

Our goal is to establish a local population of Bobwhite quail that can thrive and eventually turn this project into something much larger and state-wide. Working with our local pheasants forever we hope to eventually make this project into something similar to Salmon in the Classroom, where those schools can also raise and release these quail in their community. This allows students to learn about animal development, track growth, understand natural wild animal behavior, and practice skills in ecology knowing that animals should be respected and appreciated.

The items we have listed will allow for incubation, inside rearing, and then the establishment of an outdoor flight pen where these young birds can learn how to survive on their own, foraging, before being released. This method gives the birds a greater chance at survival when released in an optimal environment with land owners who back the mission we are working towards.
