BLOXELS! Coding, Creativity, and Chromebooks!

My Students

Our schools are located in high poverty, rural communities. Education has evolved, the students live in a digital world and thrive with hands-on activities. Traditional teaching does not work anymore. Students are energetic and need to get up and get moving throughout the school day. Creating environments to be able to meet all the needs of students, in a variety of ways, is crucial for our students to master concepts and be successful. As a teacher in a low-income district, I try to provide the best experiences for my students in the classroom, as well as, out of the classroom.

My Project

When students build games, they become the writers, artists, designers, and developers of their own interactive stories. Using the Bloxels gameboard and blocks, students will create their own 13-bit layouts, characters, and art for their game. Students dictate the story they are going to tell and the path their characters will take.

As technology evolves, the skills required for future jobs are changing as well.

It is more important than ever for students to have a grasp on 21st-century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, flexibility, and media literacy. These skills, among many others, will allow students to flourish in their future endeavors.

Utilizing technology that we currently have, such as iPads and with the addition of the new Chromebook, in conjunction with the Bloxels, the students will be able to piece their games together. Using the Class Library, students can share their creations privately with their class. Working as a team, students are able to quickly collaborate on their layouts, characters, and art.

As a media specialist, I plan to use Bloxels to blend the content students are learning in the classroom with important computer skills such as coding, design, and engineering. By having the sets of Bloxels in my classroom, I will be able to start a game design unit after my coding unit. The students will use the Bloxels to plan out and build their characters, background, and any special details. What I love best Bloxels is that the students will be able to create a piece of art, while telling a story and coding to make their own game.
