This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Trenton, New Jersey is (and this is amazing!) a sanctuary city. Students from nations all over the world immigrate to Trenton with their families. The city, although economically poor in many areas, is rich in cultures and heritage from all corners of the world. We have a growing population of Hispanic immigrants, most speaking Spanish as their native language. Many of our students, both native and non-native to Trenton, struggle to meet basic classroom needs each day. This means that it is extra important for us to ensure they have a classroom filled with essential items they can access at any time. Their social-emotional well-being depends on knowing that they are cared for, loved, and respected.
The items I am requesting will provide our community clothes bank with clothes which is a student led community service effort run by our Brotherhood, Girls Group, and Student Government.
Our students have created a managed a clothing bank that supports the community during community service events. They distribute clothing to those in need, including our own students. I am requesting leggings in all sizes for those who need them. Students run our community clothing bank and say this is our most needed item. This clothes bank services the families of our city Trenton. Students in our student government monitor the bank and during community events we distribute clothes to those in need. During community service events we run at the school, these clothes are the first things to go!
These items will go a long way in ensuring our students feel cared for and celebrated which will support their social-emotional learning. I am requesting these items for students to care for their hygiene during the school day.
