Blended Voices Break Down Barriers: An Anti-Bullying Project

My students need the book "Bullying in Schools", Cooperative Folk and Popular duet songs, books and CDs and an iPod Touch.

My Students

From the time I was young, I have always loved music, and through it, I have met and made many of my dearest friends. With this project, I hope to help break down bullying and build friendships by uniting students through music and learning to sing fun folk and popular duets.

The school in which I teach is a Title 1 school located near an Air Force Base.

Many of the students I serve have a variety of needs educationally but also socially. I am a music teacher so I encounter over 700 children in a given week. Our school includes a mixture of local and military students. As a school, we have begun a Character ed/Anti bullying campaign and, as a resource teacher, I am interested in doing something to promote this program. In my mind nothing brings people together faster than music. With this project, students will learn to work together in tight knit pairs to produce fun and entertaining musical duets. My hope is that as students begin to work together, they will begin to see more ways that they are similar than different, and perhaps have the opportunity to build a long term friendship.

My Project

With the book "Bullying in Schools" I will be able to educate myself and my students on the types of behaviors that encompass bullying and discuss why these behaviors can be so harmful - both to the bully and the person being bullied. As we prepare for the duet project,I will begin introducing the students to various concepts of friendship and cooperation. We will use the "Folk Music Duet" book and "Grab a Partner" duet book and CD to help the students decide on a song which they can work together on. The IPOD will be used to play duet selections for the students in order to aid them in learning their parts. We will also use it to record and playback practice sessions so students may learn to critique one another in a positive, and constructive manner. Proper and effective communication is an essential skill needed in the real world and is one of several needed to combat bullying.

This project is important to me, because more than anything, I want to do what I can to prepare my students for the world they will encounter when they grow up.

By teaching them to cooperate, get along with others, value differences and give constructive criticism, I will be doing my part to ensure they will have the skills necessary to make and maintain relationships. As relationships are mainly what make life meaningful, then they are essential to ones survival.
