My Students
I am a teacher of students with severe and multiple disabilities in an economically disadvantaged area. Remote learning has been difficult for my students and their families. They are typically hands-on learners who require a multi-sensory approach to learning.
My students thrive when provided hands-on materials that they can manipulate and explore.
I have sent all of my materials home to help support their learning while they are away from school. It is up to us, as teachers, to provide non conventional ways to teach abstract concepts. Not being able to be in front of my students during this time only makes this harder. Parents are frustrated and their children are not fully engaged due to a lack of materials to help support them.
Currently, I am providing lessons remotely that are goal specific to each of my students. Throughout this time, they are using an adapted academic curriculum with individualized materials to customize activities. Everyday we celebrate our student's accomplishments, no matter how small. There is nothing better then a smile and glance from a student to brighten any day!
My Project
No pandemic will stop me from helping my students learn the skills they need to be successful in life. My kiddos were learning function skills including how to identify objects, shop in grocery stores and participate in daily activities for living. Now my living room is my classroom and materials are shown on camera rather than in the students hands. Therefore, it is very important that I have the resources to help them grasp the concepts and skills they need to succeed in the next school year.
By creating tactile materials that can be used at home, I can invite my students to participate in learning.
I can use the materials to model for the parents what they can do to help support their children. The laminating sheets and Velcro will help me create accessible worksheets that will be used by my students in their homes. They will be sent home in the folders. The photo boxes will allow me to create individualized task boxes to meet their IEP goals and the caddies will allow students to take ownership of their own materials since for their health and safety they cannot share. My students have severe and multiple disabilities and need as many tactile supports as they can.
