Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At my school, "Every Student Counts and Every Moment Matters!"
Our students come to school each and every day ready to take on the world and to learn, challenging themselves to be better than they were the day before!
MES, my home for the last two years, is committed to providing its students with all of the resources that are needed to engage students in rigorous, dynamic and inspirational instructional activities.
Many of our students have experiences that no child should have. Our families are the most caring, compassionate and hard-working you will find, but many of them unfortunately experience tough times that lead to homelessness, displacement and a struggle to provide for basic essentials. This is where we step in as a school and a safe haven.
There may be times when we do not have what we need, but we have taken on the "We can't yet..." not a "We can't..." attitude. All of the resources we want to provide to our students are available to us through the magic of DonorsChoose.org thanks to donors like YOU!
My Project
"Dressing up" is always a struggle for our male students. Poverty and homelessness are situations our students struggle with daily. In many instances, Our principal has allowed them to choose one of his personal ties to wear on special days. We would love all students to have access to a tie and blazer on our Men Who Read days. We need dress blazers to start this new initiative! It is important that boys' male role models read. If Dad, Grandpa, or Uncles are never seen reading, then a boy will grow up to believe that men do not read, but if a boy grows up seeing the men in his life reading, even if it is a magazine or a newspaper, then he will grow up knowing that men read too. This is why we have taken on the challenge of seeking professional men in the city to come read with male students. Monthly, all of our boys will meet to hear a guest male reader from the community. Many local celebrities, pastors and college athletes have volunteered to assist us to raise test scores of male students, who nationally trail behind their female counterparts in reading. Help make these days more powerful by dressing our gentlemen appropriately!
When we are able to "dress the part" our self esteem, confidence and overall positive self image are boosted!
We want our students who struggle with poverty and homelessness to be able to have an experience that they may not otherwise be able to have. All students deserve to know what it's like to "dress for success!"
When this project is fully funded, in addition to a project for ties, our gentlemen will be able to "dress the part." Thank you for your support of our amazing students!
