I have a wonderful group of 25 students this year! They are eager and excited about learning everything! As there is every year, we have a unique range of abilities in our classroom. Some students are already beginning readers and others are still learning the basics of letters and sounds. No matter where they are in their reading abilities, they all love to share a good story.
We have so much to learn in K5 - reading, math, writing, science and social studies - and the only way to get it all in is through integration!
Our favorite way to integrate learning throughout the day is through some of our favorite children's authors.
My Project
One of our favorite children's authors is Jan Brett. She creates both new stories and retells favorite classics. Her detailed illustrations are both beautiful and packed full of information about various settings from around the world. As an author and illustrator, Jan Brett spends months researching different parts of the word and different animals to create the settings and characters in her books.
Jan Brett books are a great way to learn our reading standards while also introducing and reviewing our science and social studies standards.
One book, "Cinders: A Chicken Cinderella" fits in with our fairy tale unit. Students are also introduced to chickens and our science unit of animals. We can also learn about culture and traditions from Russia. Another book "The Three Snow Bears" retells the story of "Goldilocks" while also introducing us to animals of the Arctic and our science unit of weather and seasons.
Connections between subjects not only help us "fit it all in" throughout the day, but they also make learning more relevant for the students.
