My Students

CDSA is an arts focused Elementary school in Idaho. Since we are a public school, the student's at our school come from all different backgrounds making it a uniquely diverse culture.

My students are special, not only because they are atypical students, but more importantly because each and every one of them has unique abilities and talents that we get to focus on and use to their advantage.

A portion of my students experience difficult home lives including, but not limited to; divorced families, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and being homeless. It is important to me to provide a safe and predictable environment for my students to come to on a daily basis. They need their basic emotional needs met first in order to be good students.

All of my students​ require individualized, specially designed instruction in order to help them succeed. Each one has a qualifying disability for Special Education supports ranging from Developmental Delay, to Autism, to Specific Learning Disability. When they come to the Extended Resource Room, my assistants and I are able to focus on their individual strengths and needs to support their overall learning.

My Project

Sensory processing is the ability to take in, organize, and process information received from the environment and how our body uses it in a functional manner. Sensory information enters through the body’s seven senses (sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch, vestibular, and proprioceptive). Some students can have a difficult time processing this information and it can overwhelm their sensory systems.

The goal of participating in sensory processing activities is to help the nervous system’s ability to process sensory input in a more “normal” way.

My students' need sensory processing tools such as weighted lap pads, a mini trampoline, and balance stones and beams in order to help them regulate and be successful in the school environment. These materials will help my students gain sensory stimulation or avoidance. For example, the trampoline, weighted slam balls and weighted lap pads will provide stress relief, tactile stimulation and feedback to the joints.

The purpose of a sensory room is to provide a safe environment for students to engage and challenge their various sensory systems with the support of direct staff involvement. It is used to create a calming or arousing response in a child and to help them reset. These responses will assist a child’s ability to learn. When all the systems are integrated, the end products are seen as appropriate play, gross motor, fine motor, academic, social, self-help skills, and appropriate attention span.
