I teach advanced English to high school students in upstate New York. Like so many communities across the country, our area has endured significant economic and demographic changes over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless, our families and students are resilient, determined, and eager to make the world a better place.
My students are writers and readers who will soon enter the world of college and work.
They want to make their mark in the world, and it's my job to prepare them!
My Project
Along with advanced classes, I also teach Graphic Novels. This class draws students of all abilities and interests. We learn about archetypes, visual symbolism, and so much more. For the first eight weeks, we focus exclusively on superheroes.
I'd like to celebrate our learning by arranging for students and their families to see Marvel's Black Panther at a local theatre.
Too often, what students learn in the classroom doesn't make it to the dinner table. This group screening will give students and parents the opportunity to share in a significant learning experience.
Black Panther, aka T'Challa, was the first black superhero, debuting in comic books in 1966. He arrived on the screen in 2016 in Captain America: Civil War. In the upcoming movie, Black Panther returns to save the world from evil.
It is my hope that the issues brought up in class and in the movie will be the start of important conversations between students and their families. For example, what role can each of us play in making the world safe from evil?
