This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a 2nd grade teacher and have been at my school for 17 years. This is our 2nd year doing a living wax museum for Black History Month. Last year, we had students write a report and dress up but we want to step it up a notch! Our goal is to do this project better than last year!
Many of the students I teach live below the poverty level.
Several of them live in homeless shelters. A lot of my students have single-parent households or live with extended family or even in foster homes. There are students in my class who only eat breakfast and lunch at school because there is no food at home. There are many inequities in funding for our school versus suburban schools and we do not have any extra money in the budget for books.
Above all, my students continue to come to school. They love exploring new concepts during math centers. They try their best. They live by our school's pledge which is "Never give up if you falter or fail."
My Project
The 2nd graders last year were the first at our school to participate in a living wax museum for Black History Month. This year, we want to step it up a notch and include project boards to accompany each student as they dress in costume and read their reports about their historic person.
We want to have a better living wax museum then last year!
We need the boards so students can be more easily identified as their historical person as well as display the research that they have done on their famous person.
For the 3rd marking period, students will be working on informational writing and this will be the first big project that they need to complete this school year. I enjoy getting families involved to help their children to learn more about their famous historical figure.
