My Project

My students are of African-American and Latino-American heritage from low-income communities. Unfortunately, they carry a stigma of learning in a "Special Needs" classroom. Thus, I explained that "Special Needs" simply means doing innovative "Special Things" through using unique resources and engaging in unique activities that are aligned to how brains works in "special" and diverse ways.

They are inquisitive, bright and eager to learn, deserving of a top quality books aligned to the curriculum and their interests!

I am new to the school this year as they were without a teacher the first semester. What is unique about my students are their diverse learning needs and their newfound interest in learning. Not only do they show an interest in the arts and the sciences, they are now open to reading novels and this is exceptional news!

Reading tends to be the least favorite subject as students have struggled with phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, and decoding of multi-syllabic words in elementary school. Now in high school with the same deficits, reading tends to be avoided. As a Special Education teacher, I am able to address those needs while teaching them strategies on how to read!

The books selected are both graphic novels in celebration of Black History Month, which is a curriculum taught all year long. The African-American graphic novels supports students who struggles heavily with word recognition and the high-interest novels are aligned to characters and stories that represent the lives of my students with outcomes of positive solutions. Schools can provide the right teacher to place in front of students, but it's up to the teacher to provide the "right" resources that will resonate with her students towards academic and social achievement. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity!
