My Students

My 3rd graders attend school in a low-income, diverse, and urban environment. As a bilingual school, we have a large ELL population and with this year's recent school closing from March to June, I anticipate to have many student who are behind on grade level standards and will need extra support and interventions this upcoming school year.

My students amaze me with their ability to persevere and work hard, no matter the circumstances.

Even through distance learning this past spring, our students were brave, resilient and independent. I know how excited and grateful our kids are to return to school after over 5 months of isolation and to finally reunite with their teachers, peers and classrooms. Despite the challenges they may face outside of school, my students will still come to school with a smile and a love of learning.

As the year goes on, I want my students to always feel comfortable, motivated and challenged to strive to do their best. These students have big dreams for their future and my goal is to always give them the resources to make them believe that they can achieve all of them.

My Project

As a teacher, 2020 has made me reflect on what I can do better for my students through my lessons and discussions of history. How can I help promote equality, black appreciation and anti-racism? As an educator, I am grateful to have the opportunity to guide students to oversee bias and learn to love, not hate while they're in my classroom. It is my hope that they will carry these lessons with them after they have walked out my door.

All students deserve consistent exposure to black history, not only in February but all year long.

I want to provide lessons for students that don't just make them think, but make them feel. These books about black leaders and survivors that overcame slavery, the civil rights movement and systematic oppression deserve to be taught. Children need to hear their stories. Children need to feel these stories. I want my students to understand that these events were real, and that they have the power to love one another and not produce hate, like these events once did.

Classroom environments shapes our students. Students should walk around their classroom surrounded by things that inspire them, which is why I've included bulletin board and poster materials that exemplify black men and women who have fought for equality and justice.
