Help me give my students novels where they can see themselves represented. A bookshelf filled with books by contemporary African American writers who have created relatable protagonists and scenarios.

I teach 53 Special Education students who are super motivated to bring their reading skills up to grade level and beyond! My students yearn to grow as readers, but it's not always easy to find themselves reflected in mainstream middle grades books.
Our school serves predominantly African American students and has an Afrocentric focus that emphasizes pride in our heritage, community and culture.
We are located in the heart of North Minneapolis and many of our students do not have easy access to the books they need to develop a lifelong love for reading.
Help me give my students books where they are motivated to read because they see themselves and identify with protagonists in the stories being told.
Black youth have historically been, and continue to be underrepresented, misrepresented or invisible in school libraries.
I am building a library filled with books written predominantly by African American writers with protagonists and story lines that are relevant to my struggling readers. The books on my wish list have proven to be accessible and engaging for struggling readers. Our school is emphasizing independent reading to strengthen skills and build intrinsic motivation to become more avid readers. I am determined to help my hardworking scholars develop a passion for reading they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
