Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Integrating technology into curriculum is difficult for teachers and students preparing for high-stakes testing. Librarians can teach these skills through a teen/technology book club whereby students read and create book trailers using software while reinforcing literary and technology concepts

The student population is 86% free or reduced lunch recipients.

Many of the students are in an AVID program to help them learn study skills to be college and career ready. The population is mainly Afro-American and Hispanic. The parents of these children are not college educated, and some are first generation immigrants. Many of the parents are illiterate in their native language. The community is semi-rural with slowed growth due to the economy, thus school funding from property taxes has decreased. The small community has a fledgling volunteer public library that doesn't offer technology resources. The students that will use the equipment are diverse.

My Project

The teen technology students will use the digital photo frame to play videos of themselves using copyright free music and images uploaded into several video software such as Movie Maker and Animoto.com. They will create videos about using the library, upcoming library events, author studies, and advertise books they have read by creating book trailer videos.This purchase will enable students to use software and equipment that they do not have access to at home. Most of our students do not have home computers or Internet services. They are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Most of the students at the school will be impacted over several school years because the computer labs and library are scheduled regularly. Some of the curriculum is totally technology based.

Our library is striving to incorporate the ideals of a 21'st Century Library.

Students need to learn literacy skills which include knowing when and how to access and evaluate information. The new middle school was built as a pilot technology enriched school and our middle school has not updated our technology. Both middle schools feed into the same high school which means that students from our middle school will be less technology ready because of lack of equipment and exposure.
