The student population is 86% free or reduced lunch recipients. Many of the students are in an AVID program to help them learn study skills to be college and career ready. The population is mainly Afro-American and Hispanic. The parents of these children are not college educated and many are first generation immigrants. Many of the parents are illiterate in their native language. The community is semi-rural. The community growth has slowed due to the economy thus funding from property taxes has decreased. Many of the students are life skills, special education and dyslexic students that will be using headphones/microphones to talk and respond to computer software applications. The new middle school was built as a pilot technology enriched school and our middle school has not updated our technology. Both schools feed into the same high school which means that students from our middle school will be less technology ready because of lack of equipment and exposure.
