My Project

The integration of real-world nutrition labels into the middle school science curriculum offers a powerful, hands-on approach to understanding biochemistry and human health. By providing a variety of healthy snacks with clear nutrition facts, we transform the science lab into a living laboratory. Students will move beyond abstract concepts of "calories" and "macromolecules" to perform detailed quantitative analysis. They will use the provided snacks to calculate serving size ratios, analyze the chemical composition of ingredients, and visualize how sugars and fats are processed by the body to sustain energy.

The students will receive two primary benefits from this interactive snack unit- First, it fosters critical thinking and health literacy; by dissecting the data on a snack wrapper, students learn to see through marketing "health halos" and make evidence-based decisions about what they consume-Second, it provides sustained cognitive fueling.

Middle schoolers often experience energy crashes that hinder complex problem-solving. By providing nutrient-dense snacks during lab time, we ensure their brains have the glucose and protein necessary to remain engaged and physically regulated throughout the entire scientific process.

As a culminating event, we will host a "Fuel for Thought" Nutrition Assembly for the entire school. During this event, our student-scientists will present their findings, showcasing the "better choice" alternatives they discovered during the unit. To celebrate their hard work and cement their learning, the students will finally enjoy the healthy snacks they have been studying. This assembly allows our class to transition from learners to leaders, teaching their peers how to swap high-processed items for smarter lunch choices, turning a simple snack into a catalyst for a healthier school community.
