I work in a small school with a big heart. We serve a diverse population with more than half our our students come from low income households. The class of students I am working with are happy to be at school, however they are struggling with reading and writing. By building common experiences with the nature at our doorstep, I am hoping to spark learning and excitement about world just outside our door.
My Project
Our school yard is home to swallows, Canadian geese, and many other variety of birds. The students will be discovering the birds we have, the needs they have and how we can protect them. We will be reading lots of bird books, identifying birds that come to our feeder and noting all the different varieties around us. We will also learn about birds in other parts of our world. We will be writing books, creating posters and murals of their learning. My wish is for the students to see that experiences and joy can come from anywhere around us. Our final project will be to share our bird expertise with other students.
