This project is fully funded

I am a third and fourth grade teacher at a small elementary school in the East Village. I teach all academic subjects to an extremely diverse group of students, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, and special education needs. My class also includes several English language learners. This year our science curriculum focuses on forest life, which coincides with our social studies work about Eastern Woodlands Indians. We have finished a unit of study on trees, and are now launching a study of birds. Because environmental exploration is so essential to their learning experience, I am requesting funding for a field trip to the Prospect Park Audubon Center. Although we can see a few birds in our urban setting, it is not possible to spot a good variety of birds in our school neighborhood. I firmly believe that the students will benefit from studying birds in their natural environment in addition to classroom instruction and reading informational texts. Audubon\\\'s school programs emphasize observing a \\\"strong diversity\\\" of birds in their natural setting. The program will be led by a knowledgeable instructor who will engage students with interactive curricula and clarify concepts through real-world examples and settings. The Audubon Center provides binoculars and field guides to use during the trip. I know that this hands-on program will motivate the students for their bird study and encourage them to be more environmentally aware. They will come away from the experience excited to study more about birds and other forest life.
