Bippity-Boppity-Boo! Fairy Tales for Reluctant Readers

I am a third grade teacher in an early childhood education school in a New York neighborhood.

My class is incredibly multicultural - all of my students are bilingual and over seven different languages are spoken in their homes! They are a bright and motivated group of students that are a joy to work with.

My Project

As English Language Learners, my students struggle to read and write fluently in English - many of them are behind grade level in their reading abilities. As committed students, they try and try to push themselves to read challenging books but lose interest and focus quickly. The books that they have chosen are usually considered great books - but my students do not seem interested in them enough to really fight for comprehension and understanding. Recently, however, I have seen my ELLs develop a keen interest in the few fairy tales in my library. These fairy tales are picture books, but don't let that deceive you - they're often written at 3rd - 5th grade reading levels. Despite the challenge of reading them, however, my students are committed to reading and re-reading them! I asked them why they loved these stories so much and their response was clear: these books are FUN! They love the pictures, the imaginary worlds, the presence of magic, and the lessons they can learn.

If I am going to help my students on their paths to becoming lifelong readers, I believe the first thing I must do is provide them with books that will both interest them and push them to read more challenging texts.

The way to do this is by providing my students with access to fairy tales in our classroom. Thank you for your donation.
