My school is a public high school. Many of our students live along the bayous of southern Louisiana. My biology classes are mixed with boys and girls along with various ethnic groups.
All of our students receive free lunch due to our demographics.
Our school demographics consists of 33.5 Caucasians, 34.9 African American, 19.3 Native-American, 9.8 Hispanic, and 3 Asian. The students enjoy coming to my class because most of the time they are in groups doing a variety of activities.
This will be the first year the state of Louisiana is implementing NGSS performance expectations. I need extra resources to help my students meet these expectations. The mammal dissections will be used as a tool to enhance their knowledge of the systems of the body. My students rarely understand the comparison of photosynthesis and respiration, so I feel as if the hands on kit will enhance their knowledge on the material.
Using technology(ineoscience series) and dissections to engage students will help them become more successful on the LEAP 2025.
The dissections will help my students be able to understand the systems of the body and allow comparisons across the mammal species. Using these materials my students will look forward coming to may class knowing they will experience things they haven't experienced before.
