My Students

Our school includes a large variety of students from various countries all over the world. One hundred percent of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and we are a school-wide recipient of Title I funds.

One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing the change that my students undergo over the course of the year.

I am fortunate enough to see kids develop ways to express kindness each and every day. They use manners that weren't present in August. I have seen students who loathed reading turn into book lovers. A great part is hearing students say that math is their favorite subject because that was not true for me as a child.

My classroom is full of faces and personalities that will impact our future world. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to do everything I can to make sure that impact will be a positive impact.

My Project

I am requesting bins and table caddies. I have been so fotunate to receive multiple small group sets of novels that my students use DAILY for our student led book groups. They each have jobs (quizzing questioner, character analyst, and reading reporter just to name a few!) and pick books they are interested in based on current levels. These groups are one of my favorite parts of the day because they see they CAN read chapter books, they CAN read for understanding on their own, and they are sharpening their thinking skills by asking each other questions instead of me always asking them. They have norms they adhere to and that also helps them learn and practice social skills in a controlled setting daily.

I am asking for bins to keep the most recently acquired books in with the set of jobs and norms - this allows each group to have a "go to" bucket with all needed supplies to ensure these books last for years to come!

When they finish a book, they write a book review, select what theme they believe the story was an example of, and then get to select another book.
