I am a third- and fourth-grade teacher at a small elementary school in the East Village. I teach all academic subjects to an extremely diverse group of students, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special-education needs. This year in social studies, we are focusing on Eastern Woodlands Indians. Students will learn about the lives and history of Native Americans residing in our area prior to European and African settlement. In science, we are studying the forest environment in which these Native Americans lived, with a special concentration on the ecological relationships within the forest ecosystem. This grant proposal provides for supplies and books to enhance this study. Students will learn about the forest through observation, experimentation, and book research. We will take field trips to nearby forests, so that students can get a fuller sense of what it might be like to live in this environment. We will also work as a group to create our own field guide to a small local park, which we are researching weekly. Students will need to do first-hand observation, as well as book research, to create this guide. In the past, I have found that such observation, when carefully conducted, can be a source of great pleasure and learning for students. They are thrilled when they learn to notice tiny insects feeding on beautiful flowers, or when they discover the name of their favorite tree. It is my hope that our forest study will provide many opportunities for students to experience fascination and joy in learning, as well as to develop the disciplined skills of observation, recording, note-taking, and non-fiction writing. In order to do this work in the most productive way possible, we need to make use of certain supplies. In this grant, I am requesting the following materials: enough binoculars and magnifying glasses for students to share with partners, and an array of children's field guides for students to share during small group work. Among countless other activities, I envision students observing a bird's flight with the binoculars, closely studying a flower bud with the magnifying glass, and using the field guides as sources of information and models for their own writing. I anticipate that with these supplies, our forest study will be a meaningful and memorable experience for the whole class.
